In a modern digital device, this pulse is often taken for granted, buried deep within a silicon chip. But in a radio like the DX-2547, its physical nature is much closer to the surface. The source of this heartbeat is a tiny, wafer-thin sliver of quartz crystal.

This isn’t just any rock. Quartz possesses a remarkable property discovered by the Curie brothers in 1880: piezoelectricity. Squeeze it, and it generates a tiny voltage. Apply a voltage to it, and it physically deforms. By placing this crystal in a specific electronic circuit, it can be coaxed into vibrating, or oscillating, at an incredibly precise frequency—millions of times per second. This constant, rhythmic flexing is the radio’s reference clock, the pure tone upon which your voice will eventually ride.

The difference is profound. If AM is like mailing a one-page letter taped to a ten-pound brick (the carrier), SSB is like mailing just the letter itself. It requires far less energy to send, takes up less space, and is much more likely to be read clearly at the other end, especially when the conditions are poor.


The Great Leap

With your voice encoded onto a wave, you press the microphone key. The signal surges through the coax cable to the antenna, and then, it takes an incredible leap. It is no longer bound by wires, but is now a self-propagating wave of electromagnetic energy, racing away at the speed of light. For local communication, this wave travels in a straight line to its destination. But the true magic of the 27 MHz band lies in its potential for a much grander journey.

High above us, starting at an altitude of about 60 kilometers, our atmosphere is no longer neutral.
